WHAT IS A GROUP A STREPTOCOCCAL (GAS) INFECTION?
Streptococcal infections are any type of infection caused by the group of bacteria streptococcus. There are many different types of streptococci, and infections vary in severity from mild throat infections to pneumonia. Streptococcal bacteria are highly contagious. They can spread through airborne droplets when someone with the infection coughs or sneezes, or through shared food or drinks. Antibiotics can also help kill any strep A bacteria left in the body.
FACTS OF THE CASE
Our client underwent a small surgical procedure to treat a Bartholin duct cyst. One week later our client developed severe in the groin area. As a result, the doctor performed a revision surgery our client to to repair the hemorrhage. Two weeks later our client developed fever, and night sweats. The obvious potential problem was an infection. As a result, her doctor ordered a blood test. Our client received a blood test, which indicated a group A streptococcal (GAS) infection.
For the next several days our client telephoned her doctor while the infection continued. Her doctor never contacted her in spite of numerous calls from our client, and also her husband. Next, receiving no return call from her doctor, our client was rushed by ambulance to the Lawrence & Memorial hospital in New London, Connecticut where she received treatment for the infection. She remained there for two more weeks. Unfortunately, the infection led to her death from sepsis.
An infection must be taken very seriously because it can lead to multi-organ failure and sepsis. In this case the GAS infection could have been treated with simple antibiotics like penicillin.
This very unfortunate outcome would have been avoided had the infection been treated promptly with antibiotics.
